Many people had high hopes for 2020 until the COVID-19 pandemic put our goals, plans and dreams on hold.

There isn't a single individual that has not been affected by it. From increased panic and  anxiety, to holiday cancellations, job loss, lockdown restrictions and curfews, this pandemic has impacted our daily lives and the way we live, work and operate.

Getting used to the new normal includes continued social distancing, remote working and several new health and safety measures which may be difficult to adjust to. We’ve put together self empowerment techniques and advice on how to cope during a pandemic.

Create a routine

A routine adds structure to your day and helps you stay productive. You don’t have to make yourself super busy and overworked, but you can add enough tasks to your to-do-list just so you’re not completely idle.

If you’re working from home, it can be tempting to slack a little but staying disciplined by waking up the same time you normally would if you were commuting to the office is a good way to keep your day structured. If you are not working at the moment but need a job, dedicate a few hours to job hunting or finding your next gig. There are also lots of volunteering opportunities you can look into where you can put your specialist skills to good use to help those who have been impacted by COVID-19. You can also use free time to indulge in hobbies.

A lot of people are spending more time at home, so this can be a good opportunity to improve your surroundings by repairing, renovating, decluttering or deep cleaning your home. Not only will this give you something to do, it will also turn your home into a more comfortable space that you enjoy existing in.
Having a daily routine makes your day flow better and gives you a sense of control.

Plan your future

Nobody could have anticipated the life-changing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. 2020 was tipped to be an exciting year for many people but the virus outbreak shattered plans, so we’ve all had to go back to the drawing board and re-plan our future. Think about how the pandemic has impacted you and what you could do to prepare as best as you can for possible unexpected events like this. Maybe you could build an emergency savings account, work on your side hustle, increase your income stream or learn new skills to keep up with the ever changing job market.

Making small or intentional improvements to your life is progressive and shows
determination. Furthermore, the ability to re-strategise and come out of tough situations stronger and wiser is empowering.

Stay fit

Fitness has become even more popular since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down many gyms and reduced their opening hours. Staying active boosts your mental health. It can also help you manage anxiety and leads to increased emotional and physical well-being.

There are many fun ways to work out indoors. From virtual yoga sessions on Instagram Live to Zumba dance classes and HIIT workouts on YouTube - there are so many options that you’ll be spoiled for choice. For outdoor fitness, you can go for a jog, walk or bike ride. Make sure you wear a mask and practice social distancing. Keeping fit makes you feel good and is a proven way to empower yourself.

Learn to relax without feeling guilty about it. Resting recharges your batteries and makes you feel stronger. Plus, getting enough sleep boosts your immune system and improves your mental health.

The amount of stress and panic that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused can leave you feeling drained and tired, so taking breaks is important. Have days off where you do absolutely nothing. This can lead to increased feelings of energy and productivity.

Treat yourself

Practicing self-care can help you manage stress and treating yourself occasionally is a great way to do it. Small indulgences reinforce the importance of putting yourself first and can boost your confidence, mood and well-being. Never feel guilty for carving out some time for yourself. Amidst the pandemic, noise and clutter, zoning out to pamper yourself makes all the difference. Taking care of your needs is extremely empowering. So go ahead and spoil yourself! You deserve it.

Now that you’ve read our tips on how to empower yourself, it’s time to start making little changes to a new and improved you.
